SCOTTY SO: QUEEN OF BEGONIAS AND HAI KOT TOU
FRI 23 FEB - SUN 28 APR
Art Screen, Ballarat
EXHIBITION
This 24-hour outdoor installation includes still images from the Kai Kot Tou series by Hong Kong-born, Melbourne-based artist Scotty So satirizing high-end fashion brands, with a new video work paying tribute to Ballarat's own Begonia Queens. The Begonia Queens who were a feature of Ballarat’s Begonia Festival from 1953 to 1993.
Images from So’s series Hai Kot Tou will also be exhibited for the first time in Australia, in which the artist is photographed dressed in fake items from high-fashion brands, with matching grocery trolleys, echoing the head-to-toe monogram trend of the new money in Asia.
Free to attend, no booking required.
**This event is independently produced by Ballarat Art Gallery and forms part of our Independent Programme.
ABOUT THE ORGANISERS
Scotty So is a Melbourne-based artist who works across media, using painting, photography, sculptures, site-responsive installation, videos and drag performance. Driven by the thrill of camp, he explores the often-contradictory relationship between humour and sincerity within lived experience to offer a glimpse of a future society that embraces difference.
The Art Gallery of Ballarat is the heart of the creative city of Ballarat. A place for Ballarat to look beyond everyday life; to be inspired and engaged by art. Nineteenth-century beliefs placed the Gallery at the centre for social contact, inclusion, and learning. Much of the context has changed over time, yet the central truth of the Gallery’s original manifesto ‘Not for self but for all’ is as relevant today as it was then – the Gallery exists for its audience.
