TOURMALINE: TRANSCENDENT
THURS 15 JANUARY – SAT 15 MARCH
EXHIBITION
Curated by Sophie Prince, Tourmaline: Transcendent is the first Australian solo exhibition of work by acclaimed American artist, filmmaker and writer, Tourmaline. Tourmaline has exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York, Tate, London and more, attracting an enthusiastic following for her work at the intersection of activism, archival research and fine art.
This intersection often results in the artist re-centring celebrated historical figures from LGBTIQA+ movements, to create work that strives to make sense of broader issues facing her communities. Across her writing, photography and film Tourmaline often instils messages of joy as a site of resistance, empowerment and self-determination, particularly for Black, trans and gender non-conforming communities.
Tourmaline: Transcendent is part of ACCA’s 2025–2026 Summer Season that also features r e a: c l a i m e d. A concurrent solo exhibition, r e a: c l a i m e d is a focused survey of more than thirty years of work by Gamilaraay, Wailwan and Biripi digital media artist, r e a.
