Are you ready to turn your old clothes into a statement piece? Join Indigenous (Trawlwoolway/Palawa) artist and designer, Josh Deane (Joshua-Deane Gower), for an inspiring and hands-on upcycling workshop!
This is your chance to step into the world of sustainable style and wearable art, learning the painting techniques Josh Deane uses to breathe new life into textiles.
For Josh Deane, an artist and designer known for his vibrant, narrative-rich work, upcycling is a powerful way to honour the value of every resource and minimise waste. This workshop encourages you to rethink your environmental impact, adopt a "buy less and use more" philosophy, and ensure that nothing is wasted.
What you will learn:
Expert Techniques: Josh Deane will guide you through the textile painting techniques he uses to transform discarded materials into unique, coveted wearable art.
Sustainable Design: Discover how to combine creativity with critical action against textile waste.
What you need to bring:
One piece of clean clothing made from organic materials only (e.g. cotton T-shirts, denim jackets/jeans, or genuine leather). Synthetic leather is also acceptable.
What’s provided:
All high-quality paints and inks needed to create your masterpiece.
Expert guidance and one-on-one advice from an award-winning artist and designer.
Part of Wyndham Council’s The Tapestry of Culture program, this workshop is designed to showcase the beauty and significance of clothing across different cultures, from traditional clothing techniques workshops to explorations of fashion history from around the world.

Phong Chi Lai (Studio PCL) is a Naarm based Textile Artist/Designer/Maker specializing in contemporary quilts and soft sculptures through improv patchwork.
Using upcycled/deadstock fabrics and natural dyes, Phong prioritises social and environmental care in his practice. Phong takes a considered and intuitive approach, responding to materials and his surroundings. He applies traditional techniques; hand-quilting, assemblage and patchwork with an overtly free hand approach to building compositional complexity.
