TRADITIONAL AFGHAN HAND-EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP

SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY
11:00AM

THE SOCIAL STUDIO, COLLINGWOOD YARDS, 6/30 PERRY STREET, COLLINGWOOD

Join mother and daughter collaborators, Mahboba + Somaya of Maya Designs, and learn to hand-embroider traditional Afghan motifs.

Using different stitch techniques that hold deep cultural significance, workshop participants will also receive a booklet with instructions on how to continue their hand-embroidery projects at home.

“I’m Somaya Ahmadi, and along with my mother, Mahboba Ahmadi, we are both inspired by embroidery in fashion. My mother has been embroidering since her teenage years back in our home country, Afghanistan. Learning embroidery is a tradition passed on to Afghan girls and women, especially in the Hazara tribe. Through the art of embroidery, Afghan women express themselves in bright vibrant colours and patterns that are symbolic and share a story. Embroidery is a hobby my mother enjoys and is really passionate about. Given that, I’ve chosen to incorporate elements of embroidery in my own designs and clothing pieces under my own label MAYA AMADI.

For me, embroidery is a big part of my cultural identity and also something that always reminds me of my mother, how she sings to herself songs of Afghan singer Ahmad Zhair (may peace be upon him) while embroidering beautiful, captivating patterns.”

Tickets $89
