THE FASHION CYCLE: FROM RETAIL TO REUSE

FRIDAY 28 FEBRUARY
1:00PM

ONLINE

Discover the stories behind items beyond the retail floor, from nineteenth-century arcades to a wedding dress redesigned during WWII.

All the Latest Novelties: Modernity, Luxury, and Consumer Desire in Australia’s Nineteenth-century Arcades with Nicole Davis. Nineteenth-century Australian arcades were curated spaces that sold exclusive, luxurious goods. This talk explores how retailers created consumer desire through advertising and displays, positioning the colonies as sophisticated and cosmopolitan, where fashionable items could be bought just like in Europe or North America.

Alterations as Evidence of Garment Life Cycles: Wedding Dress 1875/1943 with Dr. Laura Jocic. A wedding dress from 1875, originally worn by Alice Henty and later redesigned for three granddaughters in 1943, reveals how garments were treasured and reused across generations. This presentation explores the dress’s alterations and its significance as a well-preserved, historically rich item.

Free, bookings essential.
