SEWING REVIVAL: LEARN THE ART OF MENDING

SATURDAY 1 MARCH
11:00AM

HAWTHORN ARTS CENTRE, 360 BURWOOD ROAD, HAWTHORN

Do you have clothes in your wardrobe that have a loose button, a tear or don’t fit properly?
Learn how to mend your garments and give them a new lease on life at our hands-on workshop.
The importance of mending items: Reviving Australia’s lost manufacturing heritage.

In the 1960s, Australia was responsible for 95% of its clothing production and provided many jobs. By 1990, most clothing was made overseas, resulting in a decline in sewing skills.

Now, we are on a mission to revive these skills before they are lost forever. Our expert will be on hand to share their skills with you – no matter what level you’re at in your mending journey.
Reducing fast fashion:
In today's fast-paced world, we often discard our worn clothes for new ones simply because it's convenient.

Instead of falling out of love with your clothes, mending is a creative and meaningful way to extend their lifespan, reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.

What you’ll learn on the day:

Sue Maree, a sustainable fashion and stylist expert, will talk you through:

  • How to make sustainable clothing choices

  • How to work with pieces already in your wardrobe

  • Basic sewing skills - including button sewing, hemming clothes and making your own pin cushion

  • A light lunch will be provided

Tickets from $25
