Alongside their centrepiece exhibition FROCK A WHANAUNGATANGA, the Pacific Sisters present a short series of interventions designed to bring the whun (fun) and celebrate Pasifika culture and whanaungatanga (kinship) through fashion, actiVAtion, film and music. Nau mai, haere mai, all welcome!
The Sisters make new history by diving into the hidden depths of the Australian Performing Arts Collection to unearth a curated selection of the zoot suits of Aotearoa supergroup Split Enz, courtesy of the Australian Performing Arts Collection. Designed by Noel Crombie, these original suits will be on display throughout the festival in Arts Centre Melbourne's Smorgon Family Plaza. From 3 March, the display will expand to become a face off with the Sister's updated and thrifted responses, rewriting their intertwined histories as local legends of pop culture in Aotearoa.
FROCKtiVAtion
On 1 March, join the Pacific Sisters for a special public activation where they blend live music, spoken word, taonga pūoro (traditional māori instruments), and processional movement to bring their garments to life in a stunning ActiVAtion before going on display.
Free to attend. No bookings required.

ABOUT THE EVENT ORGANISER
Founded in the early 1990s, the Pacific Sisters is one of the longest established Tāngata Moana art collectives in Aotearoa. Emerging from the fringes of mainstream arts and culture, the Pacific Sisters are now recognised locally and internationally for their multi-disciplinary practice and fashion activism.
The Pacific Sisters apply Moana based heritage art and cultural practices while incorporating contemporary art forms, embracing their urban Māori, Pacific, and Queer identities, unique to Aotearoa NZ. Their work is held at Te Papa Tongarewa-The Museum of New Zealand, Toi o Tāmaki- Auckland City Art Gallery and Tāmaki Paenga Hira - the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
The collective is an active part of the wider Moana arts community, nurturing and mentoring younger artists as well as inspiring and supporting each other’s individual art practices. In late 2021 they created a bold new work, Te Pu o te Wheke – a series of eight life-size portraits in close collaboration with photographer Pati Tyrell. These were activated by an accompanying augmented reality app, co-developed with ISPARX. The artworks’ inaugural showing was at the Bishop Museum for the Hawai’i Triennial HT22, in Honolulu and later at Scape Public Art 22/23 Festival, in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.
