FASHIONABLE THREADS: EXPERIENCING HISTORICAL EMBROIDERY

Embroidery has been an important part of fashion design over the centuries. In this hands-on workshop, guests will explore historical garments and accessories from the collections of the Embroiderers Guild Victoria (EGV) while learning about techniques and making. Experts from the EGV will share insights about beautiful embroidered garments and accessories from the 1800s to 1940s, including, for example, art deco beaded dresses, 1930s lingerie, a bonnet from the 1880s, and Chinese and Vietnamese garments.
Workshop will include:
• An introduction to embroidery techniques
• Examination of historical garments, including object handling
• Discussion of historic and contemporary embroidery techniques
• Viewing objects on loan from EGV in the 'Inspired by Women' exhibition at The Johnston Collection, a house museum in an 1860s townhouse in East Melbourne
• Tea or Market Lane coffee on arrival

Please arrive 10 minutes early at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park for a short less than five minute journey to The Johnston Collection in the courtesy bus.

Please note there is no lift in Fairhall exhibition-house and access to the second floor requires climbing a fairly steep staircase comprising 21 steps to the first landing and then a further 8 steps to reach the second level.
Wheelchair and walker access is limited to the Ground Floor in the Administration Building and Fairhall exhibition-house. A foldable chair is available Fairhall exhibition-house for visitors on request.
